Mysterious large drones, described as "the size of an SUV", have been spotted flying over multiple regions of New Jersey, prompting investigations by the FBI and state authorities. The unexplained aerial activity has raised concerns among residents and law enforcement officials.
The latest sightings were reported in South Jersey's Evesham Township, where police received numerous calls about unusual drone activity on December 5, 2024. According to Evesham Police Chief Walt Miller, these weren't typical consumer drones, but rather massive aircraft with blinking lights that could navigate strong winds.
Similar sightings have occurred across central and northern New Jersey since November 18, particularly near sensitive locations including the Picatinny Arsenal military facility and President-elect Donald Trump's Bedminster golf course. Witnesses report seeing clusters of large drones and possibly a fixed-wing aircraft flying along the Raritan River.
In Florham Park, police have noted drone activity above critical infrastructure, including water reservoirs, electric transmission lines, rail stations, police departments, and military installations. The presence of these aircraft has been described as "nefarious in nature" by local authorities.
The mysterious aircraft have already caused practical problems. In Somerset County, an emergency medical helicopter transport had to be canceled due to drone presence near the landing area. Former Air Force sergeant Walter Ziegler reported seeing drones turning their lights off when commercial aircraft approached Newark Liberty International Airport.
New Jersey Governor Phil Murphy has met with Department of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas and other officials to address the situation. While authorities stress there is no known threat to public safety, the Federal Aviation Administration has imposed drone flight restrictions in affected areas.
The FBI is actively seeking information from the public, requesting videos and photos of these nighttime flights. Drone operators conducting unsafe operations could face fines up to $75,000, according to FAA regulations.
