OpenAI has unveiled ChatGPT Pro, a new premium subscription tier priced at $200 per month, marking a bold move into the high-end AI services market. The plan offers unlimited access to OpenAI's complete model lineup, including the advanced o1 "reasoning" model.
The steep price point positions ChatGPT Pro specifically for power users who push the platform's capabilities in areas like mathematics, programming, and content creation, according to OpenAI technical staff member Jason Wei.
A key feature of the premium tier is access to "o1 pro mode," an enhanced version of OpenAI's reasoning model that dedicates additional computing power to tackle complex problems. The company reports that this advanced mode reduces errors by 75% on basic coding challenges compared to previous versions.
The premium subscription also includes unlimited access to GPT-4o and Advanced Voice Mode, along with OpenAI joins forces with priority access to new features as they launch. OpenAI plans to make some subscriptions available at no cost through grants, starting with medical researchers at leading institutions.
This pricing strategy appears to reflect mounting pressure on OpenAI to address its financial challenges. Despite generating monthly revenue of $300 million as of August, the company faces projected losses of approximately $5 billion this year due to operational costs.
The platform maintains a strong user base of over 300 million weekly active users, with about 10 million paid subscribers. However, the new premium tier's substantial price tag - ten times higher than the standard ChatGPT Plus subscription - may test users' willingness to pay for advanced AI capabilities.
