Police arrested Luigi Mangione, a 26-year-old software developer, at a Pennsylvania McDonald's in connection with the fatal shooting of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson. A witness recognized Mangione from wanted posters and alerted authorities around 9:15 AM on Monday.
When apprehended at the Altoona fast food restaurant, Mangione was found with a gun, silencer, and four fake identification cards. One of the fake IDs matched credentials used to check into a Manhattan hostel prior to Thompson's shooting, according to police sources.
The arrest follows an extensive manhunt after Thompson was shot three times outside the Hilton Midtown in New York City. Investigators used a combination of surveillance footage, facial recognition technology, and traditional police work to track the suspect.
Law enforcement officials discovered bullets at the crime scene marked with the words "deny," "delay," and "depose" - terms that appear to reference criticism of insurance industry practices. A handwritten document found with the suspect outlined grievances against healthcare companies prioritizing profits over patient care.
Mangione, originally from Towson, Maryland, was valedictorian of his Baltimore prep school and earned a Master's degree in engineering and computer science from the University of Pennsylvania. He worked as a software developer at TrueCar Inc. for four years.
Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch confirmed Mangione is currently being held on local firearm charges in Altoona, Pennsylvania, approximately 100 miles east of Pittsburgh. While he has not been formally charged in Thompson's death, authorities identified him as their "person of interest" in the case.
The investigation remains active as New York Police Department officials coordinate with Pennsylvania authorities. Police found the suspect had been using laptops at McDonald's locations both before and after the shooting, with surveillance footage helping to confirm his identity.
