According to the report, what once took days or weeks to orchestrate can now be accomplished in minutes using AI tools. These technologies enable fraudsters to rapidly create convincing scams by automating traditionally time-consuming tasks.
The scope of AI-enabled cyber fraud is broad and growing. Scammers are using AI to build detailed profiles of potential targets by scanning online information. They're also generating fake e-commerce websites complete with fabricated business histories, product reviews, and even deceptive customer service chatbots programmed to mislead customers about suspicious charges.
Deepfake technology poses a particular threat, with criminals using AI-generated video and audio to impersonate trusted individuals during job interviews and other video calls. Microsoft points out that telltale signs of deepfakes include lip-syncing delays, unnatural speech patterns, and unusual facial expressions.
To protect consumers, Microsoft advises:
- Being skeptical of time-limited deals and countdown timers
- Verifying domain names and reviews before making purchases
- Avoiding payment methods like direct bank transfers and cryptocurrency that lack fraud protection
The report also highlights an increase in tech support scams, where criminals pose as legitimate IT support staff. In response, Microsoft has enhanced security measures for its Quick Assist tool, adding explicit warnings and requiring users to acknowledge the risks of screen sharing.
The company recommends using its Remote Help tool instead of Quick Assist for internal technical support to maintain better security standards.
